Just last month, I happened to stumble upon my elementary school classmate’s Facebook account, and upon sending a simple greeting, she told me she was coming to Japan in March. It has been 12 years since we last met or talked, and so we decided to meet up for the first time since graduation from elementary school!

And so I met up with her today for the first time in 12 years! But to be honest, we had hardly talked back then in elementary school so unfortunately there were no dramatic weeping scenes…

I don’t really keep in contact with my friends from elementary school, so it was my first time in a long, long time to talk about the old days. Our teachers back then, the rumours that went around, our classmates and what they have been up to recently. There were just so many topics flying around in our heads. On the other hand, it was a potpourri of warm fuzzy feelings of nostalgia and happiness that everyone is doing well in their lives now.

My friend came with her friend to Tokyo for traveling, and upon their request to bring them to a less-known quiet small town, I decided to take them to Shimo-Kitazawa and the stylish Daikanyama. We visited a really cool cafe opened by Ayumu Takahashi, who traveled around the world with his wife and wrote several books. The cafe was so secluded that we almost could not find it, but upon entering the well-hidden cafe, the ambience within blew us away. Daikanyama was stylish as usual, and we just strolled along the streets of chicness and vogue.

In the end, we had Udon at Shimokitazawa, had coffee at a cafe, before going to Shibuya for Okonomiyaki and Yakitori, and finally ending up with a huge fruits parfait. My friends had come to Tokyo to “eat”, and just to “eat”, and that would explain the huge portion of their schedule of which “eating” took up.

I don’t know when would be the next time I would see them, but I’m sure this would not be the last time!
